Miami Beach swimwear shows ride on wave of old glamour for 2010
07.22.09 (5:53 am) [edit]
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Old glamour is back in a big way, or at least that's the indication from this year's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim fashion shows. Hot pink proved to be the hottest hue, furthering an already popular ready-to-wear look. It was all over the runways at the Raleigh Hotel in South Beach, as were swimsuits model adorned with jewelry and hardware.
There also was a lot of transparent material, creating seductive illusions to tempt the crowd of retailers, editors and stylists previewing 2010 trends. As for shape: it was all about the bandeau and the monokini (attached bikini) or cutout one-pieces.
The shows, which ended Sunday night, displayed many high-waisted and ruffled looks. Many bathing suits were sexy in a feminine way - not overtly flashing a lot of skin. Cover-ups and beach dresses also played an important role in many collections, and the legend of Gianni Versace still loomed large in his adopted hometown. Gretta Monahan, a stylist and co-host of Bravo's "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style," was in town to host the Xtra Life Lycra show. "I think sexy will be reinvented for 2010," she said. Women will see "that they can wear a lot more, but still look sexy." MARA HOFFMAN Mara Hoffman's first runway show for swimwear was dominated by neon pink, turquoise and silver, although at times it looked like she used the whole rainbow. There were scarab and feather prints.
Some beauty models wore long beaded necklaces that were attached in the front and back and went over the bathing suits, giving them a funky, hippie look. A black two-piece was topped with a net-like cover-up that Hoffman said resembled a hammock. There was also a one-piece with a digital print of the galaxy and a long gown with the same print. A black one-piece was adorned with multicoloured fringe hanging from the neckline. A multicoloured feather print was made into a jumpsuit, with beading at the bustline. Hoffman said her inspiration was a "vision quest in the desert ... a spiritual journey into the desert." There was a long aqua caftan with red and black zigzags around the edges. A silver bikini was paired with a silver braided headband.
Some female wore turbans. "We always go in an ethnic direction," the designer explained. Dina Manzo of the "Real Housewives of New Jersey," said she loved the show and the colours: "I would wear most of it."
Austin's Fashion Week honors local talent
07.19.09 (9:47 pm) [edit]Austin's Fashion Week ends Sunday by recognizing the best of the week's events.
The Fashion Awards show Sunday will close out the week-long event. Designer Kim Jaques, whose work takes on a modern vintage look, was nominated for best designer and rising star.
"I actually literally dropped my phone when I found out," Jaques said. "Really, me? Little old me? Very excited."
Jaques said it's not just the nomination she's excited about, but the whole event.
"Austin needs something like this," she said. "There's so much inspiration around here and there's so many talented people. I go places and I'm inspired instantly, so bringing something like this to where I live and where I'm from originally, it means a lot to me."
Jaques said her work centers on a "modern day pinup girl" motif.
"We get our inspiration from things in the 1940s and 50s, pretty much my grandmother is like my basis," she said. "And I feel like the reason I should be nominated is you don't see that very often."
Six top University of Texas Designers and Project Runway Season three standout Johnathan Kayne will make an appearance.
A fashion show and live music by Octopus Project, Mike Relm, Alpha Rev, Soldier Thread and Ume.
The Long Center will host the awards.

General Requirements for Commercial Modeling:
According to popular belief, many successful commercial top model look like normal, as the simple and attractive personality. If they walked past you on the street in normal everyday clothes and with little or no makeup, you would probably not look at them twice. However, what they do possess is the ability to express an emotion, and the capability to imitate that same look time and again. For beginners, you can start practicing your unique looks and poses in front of a mirror. Many successful models do 15 to 30 minutes of mirror-work every day for improving confidence and personality.
